January issue of Community Policing DispatchCOPS Releases January Issue of Community Policing Dispatch
The Office of Community Oriented Policing Services (COPS) has released the January issue of Community Policing Dispatch. This issue’s topics include the recent COPS-sponsored conference calls examining crime and the economic downturn, the increase in copper theft, and the importance of cultural competency when designing crime prevention campaigns. The Community Policing Nugget feature explores the relationship between broken windows theory and community policing. The issue also previews new COPS publications scheduled for release this year.

Call for Presentations and Workshops
Submission deadline: January 30, 2009 before 7:00 p.m.
The National Institute of Justice is seeking presentations and workshops for the 10th Annual Crime Mapping Resource Conference. Papers should highlight geographic principles in research, geographic applications in practice, technology demonstrations, and solutions for crime and public safety problems. The conference was originally scheduled for March 2008, and papers submitted at that time will be counted.

January Is Stalking Awareness Month
Each year, more than 1 million women and nearly 400,000 men in the United States are victims of stalking. Stalking Awareness Month (January 2009) provides an opportunity to learn about this serious and often violent crime. For more information, visit the Office for Violence Against Women Web site.

Criminal Victimization, 2007
This Bureau of Justice Statistics bulletin presents estimates of rates and levels of personal and property victimization for 2007 and describes the substantial fluctuations in the survey measures of the crime rates from 2005 through 2007. (NCJ 224390)

Juvenile Residential Facility Census, 2004: Selected Findings
This Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention bulletin presents information collected about the facilities in which juvenile offenders are held. The facilities report on characteristics such as their size, structure, type, ownership, and security arrangements. (NCJ 222721)

New Blog Focuses on Environmental Issues for Corrections
The National Institute of Corrections has launched the Green Corrections blog to provide the corrections field with up-to-date information on developing and practicing environmentally friendly business practices. Green Corrections will increase environmental awareness in planning and constructing new and existing facilities, and investigate green-collar job readiness programs.
